Looking For An Eco Friendly Staycation? Fritton Lake in Norfolk Is The Eco-Luxe Getaway Done Right
Bianca Foley
I am a native Londoner who in the past, thought a break could only happen if I left the UK for warmer climes. However, post-Covid, I have been in search of more frequent, short term escapes, specifically ones that are eco-friendly and Fritton Lake in Norfolk has been on my radar for a while. Located in the heart of the Somerleyton Estate, this tranquil haven promised a blend of sustainability and luxury, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
Stay: Cabins That Speak Green
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the serene beauty of the surroundings. The accommodations at Fritton Lake are nothing short of enchanting. I opted for the clubhouse, located in the main building, but their cabins are fantastic – they perfectly balance rustic charm with modern amenities. Built with sustainable materials and designed to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, these cabins are a testament to thoughtful eco-design.
The interiors are cozy yet chic, with large windows that flood the space with natural light. It felt like being in a luxury treehouse. The use of reclaimed wood and eco-friendly furnishings further underscored their commitment to sustainability. Even the toiletries were eco-certified, aligning with my green values.
History: A Legacy of Stewardship
Fritton Lake is part of the historic Somerleyton Estate, which has been under the stewardship of the Crossley family for generations. The estate itself dates back to the Victorian era, with a rich history intertwined with the local community and landscape. The current owner, Hugh Crossley, the 4th Baron Somerleyton, has been a driving force behind the estate’s transformation into a model of sustainability.
Under his leadership, the estate has embraced a forward-thinking approach to environmental management, ensuring that the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area are preserved for future generations. This commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of Fritton Lake’s operations, from the construction of eco-lodges to the conservation of local wildlife habitats.
Sustainability: Commitment To The Cause
What sets Fritton Lake apart is its unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship. The entire site is part of the Somerleyton Estate’s broader sustainability initiative, which aims to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. Here’s how they do it:
Energy Efficiency: The lodges are equipped with solar panels and energy-efficient appliances, reducing the carbon footprint significantly. They also use a biomass boiler for heating, which is both renewable and efficient.
Water Conservation: Water is sourced responsibly, and they employ rainwater harvesting systems. Grey water recycling ensures that every drop is used wisely, minimising waste.
Waste Management: There’s a strong emphasis on reducing waste. Recycling bins are readily available, and food waste is composted on-site to nourish the gardens,
Biodiversity: The estate is a sanctuary for wildlife. They’ve planted thousands of trees and created natural habitats to support local flora and fauna. Walking around, you’ll see wildflower meadows, wetlands, and woodlands teeming with life.
Amenities: Luxurious Yet Green
Despite its eco-credentials, Fritton Lake doesn’t skimp on luxury. The amenities here cater to both relaxation and adventure, all while keeping sustainability in focus.
The centerpiece is, of course, the lake itself. Non-motorised boats, paddleboards, and canoes are available for guests. The lake is pristine, thanks to stringent conservation efforts, making it perfect for a refreshing swim.
Wellness is obviously a priority at the estate and the outdoor heated swimming pool is solar-powered, and there’s a wood-fired, floating sauna on the lake that provides the ultimate relaxation and is open to all members and holiday makers; and can be booked for private sessions later on in the day. Yoga sessions are held in picturesque spots, encouraging mindfulness in nature. Most of the grounds are dog friendly too so you can travel with your pooch as we did.
The estate’s kitchen garden supplies fresh produce for the on-site restaurant. Dining here is a treat – the menu is seasonal and reflects the best of what’s locally available. They even offer cooking classes, emphasizing sustainable culinary practices. The specials were particularly great both nights, I had an onglet steak and an incredible rack of lamb that were delicious!
For the more adventurous, there are cycling and walking trails that take you through the estate’s diverse landscapes. Guided wildlife tours are a highlight, offering insight into the local ecosystem and conservation efforts.
Fritton Lake is incredibly family-friendly. There’s a dedicated adventure playground made from natural materials, and educational programs aimed at teaching kids about the environment.
Verdict: A Must-Visit Eco-Resort
Fritton Lake is a shining example of how luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. It’s a perfect getaway for eco-conscious travelers who don’t want to compromise on comfort. The meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the stay, from the sustainably built lodges to the farm-to-table dining, is impressive.
As a Londoner, this place resonated deeply with my love for nature and my desire to protect it. Fritton Lake is more than just a staycation spot; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when sustainability is placed at the forefront. Whether you’re looking to relax, explore, or simply recharge, Fritton Lake should be at the top of your eco-travel list.
In essence, Fritton Lake isn’t just an escape from the city; it’s a step towards a greener, more mindful way of living. And that, my fellow eco-travel enthusiasts, is something worth experiencing.
2 nights at Fritton Lake for 2 people (August 2024) including breakfast in the Clubhouse rooms will cost £500.
