August Markets and Pop-ups: Sustainable Shopping
Bianca Foley
As the summer months are quickly ebbing by, there is no better time to spend outdoors at some seasonal and pop-up markets. From handmade crafts to locally sourced foods (of which we’ve already found some new recipes to try), London offers a unique opportunity to support small businesses and discover new sustainable treats. So, grab your friends and join us at SI in visiting some of the hottest eco-friendly stalls this summer.
Hosted in the outdoor piazza, the market is open Saturday and Sunday 11am – 6pm. August dates 10th, 11th, 17th, 24th, 25th & 31st.
Located in the heart of Islington, the Angel Central Sustainable Market is one of the latest additions to London’s thriving eco-conscious scene. This outdoor market offers a dynamic space for local artisans and sustainable brands to showcase their innovative products and practices.
At the Angel Central Sustainable Market, you’ll find a diverse range of makers, crafters and small brands committed to ethical and sustainable production. From zero-waste goods and upcycled fashion to ethically sourced homeware, the market is a treasure trove for those looking to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives.
Market Row, Brixton Village. Wednesday – Sunday.
The brains behind one of the city’s best Christmas markets, Pexmas, have just opened a brand new space, Stall to Store, on Market Row in Brixton Village. There’ll be a rotation of brands popping-up but the first small business traders to take up residence are all female-founded sustainable ones.
Currently on offer, you’ll find Blackmarket (who offer eco concentrated and vegan personal care products without the plastic), Leiho (stylish and super fun socks and accessories, donating a proportion of their profits to support vulnerable communities across London) and fashion designer Dorota Bojanowska (using reclaimed fabrics and upcycling vintage pieces).
P.S. While you’re down there, it would be rude not to swing by their neighbour Little Sister Brixton, who offer handpicked vintage fashion.
Abney Public Hall, Church St. Stoke Newington. Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1 September, 11am – 5pm.
Hackney Flea Market, London’s go-to destination for vintage gems, is back on Stoke Newington’s Church St. for the last weekend in August. You’ll find 20th Century furniture, salvaged French homeware, vintage clothes, curiosities & collectables, kitchenalia, reclaimed industrial lighting, and unexpected oddities. In their own words, it’s a veritable “flea-topia” of unexpected treasures, and home decor gems – and a much more sustainable way to spruce up your living space this summer.
It’s wheelchair accessible and dog friendly. And whilst you’re there, we highly recommend visiting neighbouring lifestyle stores Know&Love, who specialise in products made by local designers and small businesses from natural materials, and social enterprise Revere the Residence, who support people with disabilities.
Sunday 11 August: 12pm – 6pm. Saturday 31 August: 12pm – 6pm.
Located in the scenic Riverside East, in the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the Big Market is a perfect day out for eco-conscious shoppers. The market showcases a diverse range of sustainable products, including organic produce and eco-friendly fashion, all crafted by local artisans and makers. The lively atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to connect with like-minded individuals and support small businesses. Enjoy the beautiful riverside views and explore the city’s newest park once you’ve filled your (resuable!) bags.
Riverside East itself will be open from 9am with coffee, breakfast and lunch on offer if you need to refuel. Its a brand new spot (with a rooftop terrace) which works with local suppliers and champions sustainability with low-waste, seasonal dining.
4 Cabot Place, Canary Wharf. Open daily 10am – 7pm till 7th August.
Sustainable fashion pop-up legends, Lone Design Club, are at Canary Wharf for all your conscious fashion needs. You’ll find a curated selection of independent and conscious fashion, lifestyle and homeware brands, as well as their first ‘mini’ focused area featuring independent and conscious children’s, pet, and maternity brands. Run, don’t walk, before they close on 7th August.
