What's On In September
In Partnership With In Good Company
Summer might be nearly over but we’d argue that September is actually the biggest month around for sustainability – not only is it Secondhand September and Sustainable Fashion, but you’ve also got Fairtrade Fortnight and Zero Waste Week too.
Recharged after the holidays, London is back with a huge range of pop-ups, markets, events and festivals, plus new art and food openings, to keep your dairy jam-packed with sustainable, ethical and all around good things to do. Here’s our September round-up of the things to do that are making into ours….
Kick off your autumn wardrobe refresh the sustainable way with Secondhand September. This movement, launched by Oxfam, encourages people to dress for the world they want and instead of choosing fast fashion, shop sustainable, slow and secondhand, and swap and donate the clothes you no longer need.
Clearly there are tons of incredible charity shops out there for secondhand shopping, but we’re really excited about swapping this September. If you’ve not done this before it’s simple. You bring along items that no longer serve you and swap them instead for someone else’s!
Sustainable fashion brand Saywood Studio are hosting their first Swap Shop in Queen’s Park which is also a chance for women in sustainability to meet each other and share their stories as a more personal way of networking (you’ll write a bit about yourself and a memory of the item on a tag to go onto the clothes you swap).
📅When: 6.30 – 9pm, Wednesday 18th September, 2024
📍Where: The Hearth, 16 Lonsdale Rd, London NW6 6RD
🎫 Tickets: £27 per person
Then at the end of month, LOANHOOD, the circular fashion brand for people who want to wear new stuff without buying new, is hosting a Clothes Swap Shop at the Islington Climate Centre – you’ll be given tokens for your items in exchange for new preloved items. PS You can drop from 11.30am before doors open at 12pm so we recommend popping for a coffee across the street at ethical cafes Redemption Roasters or Trampoline.
📅When: 11.30 – 4pm, Sunday 29th September 2024
📍Where: upstairs in Islington Climate Centre (Next to Wagamama), Angel Central, 21 Parkfield St, London N1 0PS
🎫 Tickets: free, book your spot here
Move over London Fashion Week cause we know it’s really all about Sustainable Fashion Week. This annual week long community event takes place in hubs all across the UK, including Shoreditch and Crystal Palace in London, from 20 – 29 September and this year it’s all about the Power of Repair.
You’ll find repair cafes and stations to take your clothes to, swapping events, sewing classes, talks and more. Check out the full programme here.
Help end homelessness at this new London restaurant from a Michelin-starred chef
Following a hugely-successful pop-up, Michelin-starred chef Adam Simmonds and Soup Kitchen London are opening a brand new fine-dining social impact restaurant in Primrose Hill.
Home Kitchen opens on September 11th and will be recruiting members of the team from the homeless community, paying the London Living Wage and funding a catering qualification to help kickstart their careers in the industry.
Given that Chef Adam has earned a Michelin Star at two of his previous restaurants and received multiple AA rosettes, you can bet it’s not just the mission that’s going to be good. They’re taking bookings now.
Vintage lovers, this one’s for you. The Classic Car Boot Sale is back at King’s Cross, and it’s the perfect spot to find retro treasures—from clothing and accessories to vinyl records and homeware— all sold out of the boots of some very impressive classic cars. Charity Super.Mkt will also be there, along with street food, craft beer and free clothing repair workshops.
📅When: 10am – 6pm, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29th September 2024
📍Where: Granary Square, Kings Cross, London, N1C 4AA
🎫 Tickets: £6 per person
Catch this free exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea which sheds light on the issue of homelessness through the lens of contemporary art. It’s designed to give more of us the opportunity to engage with, and better understand, the stories of those with experience of homelessness. Free to visit daily between 10am and 6pm, until 20 September.
It started with a single question – can you create a restaurant without a bin? Well, it turns out you can. Welcome to the much-lauded Silo in Hackney Wick, the world’s first zero-waste restaurant.
So what does being zero-waste mean? Firstly they create everything on the menu from ingredients in their whole form, cutting out over-processing, with a full nose to tail ideology. Silo have their own flour mill, churn their own butter, forage locally and even have a fermentarium in the basement. Even the furniture, plates and decor is made from recycled materials. The food is fresh, creative and changes depending on what’s available. Zero waste, but exceptional taste.
And as to whether they really manage to live without a bin, Silo says that the 0.1% that can’t be fermented, upcycled, composted or recycled is kept on display, condensed into a 4×4 inch block of blue.
📍Silo, Unit 7 Queens Yard, Hackney Wick, London E9 5EN

For just £50 you can have your unworn items upcycled live by emerging designers in under 90 minutes, leaving with a bespoke piece. They’ll also be joined by fellow other pre-owned retailers Wayback Labs, Circular Groove and AGO for you to browse whilst the designers work their magic.
📅When: 4pm – 9pm, Thursday 5 September 2024
📍Where: Brags and Brams, 263-265 Hackney Road, E2 8NA
🎫 Tickets: Free to attend and browse, or pre-book your upcycling spot for £50
