10 of the Most Sustainable Pubs for Sunday Lunch

In my book, Sundays are best spent strolling around a park before piling into a pub for a roast (and a Bloody Mary to ward off the Sunday Scaries). It’s, therefore, fitting that I share 10 pubs that are not only serving a stellar Sunday roast but are doing so sustainably. From luxury to laidback, carbon-neutral to vegan, East End to Edinburgh, expect forward-thinking pubs from all corners of the UK.

The Pig’s Head, London

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the high street sits Clapham’s first carbon-neutral pub, The Pig’s Head. With ingredients sourced from regenerative farms and an impressive selection of sustainable spirits and wines, it’s hardly surprising that their roasts are a firm favourite amongst Londoners, SW and beyond.

The Riverside, Herefordshire

The Riverside has everything you’d want from a country pub – roaring fire, traditional beams and a welcoming atmosphere. When you pop in for Sunday lunch, expect fresh, seasonal ingredients that have either been picked from their kitchen garden and wildflower meadow or sourced from local suppliers. And if you like your grub even more guilt-free, you can pay £1.50 to offset the carbon footprint of your meal.

The Blind Bull, Peak District

For a Sunday lunch spot that’s steeped in history, The Blind Bull is a must-visit. The staff at this cosy 12th-century inn source 90% of their ingredients within a five-mile radius, handle their food waste sustainably and even upcycle their interiors. Expect an array of meat and seafood on their Sunday menu – to be washed down with a glass of English sparkling rosé, of course.

The Spread Eagle, London

After a day exploring the East End, why not round off your week at London’s first vegan pub, The Spread Eagle? Sourcing their ingredients straight from local producers and foragers, their menus are fresh, seasonal and sustainable. They serve up creative twists on the classics (think Beet Wellington and Celeriac Crackling) that are just as mouthwatering as their meat counterparts.

The Morning Star, Belfast

You’ll find this laidback local tucked down an alleyway in Belfast. But don’t let the relaxed charm fool you – they’re serious about the quality, freshness and locality of their ingredients (they even grow and handpick their pesticide-free herbs and veg). Stop by The Morning Star on a Sunday for sharing steaks, slow-roasted meats and all the trimmings.

The Abbey Inn, Yorkshire

Get yourselves down to The Abbey Inn for breathtaking scenery and an award-winning lunch to boot. From handpicking their vegetables to having their own regenerative farm, their carefully curated menus have earned them the Sustainable Pub of the Year 2025 and Best Sunday Roast of 2024 accolades.

The Scran & Scallie, Edinburgh

If you stumble upon The Scran & Scallie (a.k.a Scotland’s leading gastropub) you’re in for a real treat. Their seasonal menu is a celebration of the finest and freshest produce Scotland has to offer. And while I can’t see a roast dinner on their menu, you’ll still find all the pub classics, each one elevated to a level that won them a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand.

The Holland, London

A stone’s throw from Holland Park, Kensington’s The Holland is the perfect spot to refuel post-stroll. Their menus move with the seasons, making their roasts fresh, flavoursome and of the finest quality. They’re also big on waste reduction, banning single-use plastic in their kitchen and utilising wasted beer and wine in their cooking.

The Loch & The Tyne, Berkshire

To round off the week in style, treat yourself to a trip to The Loch & The Tyne. Their luxurious take on a roast dinner isn’t the only thing that brings diners from afar – it’s their commitment to sustainability. As well as foraging for their ingredients from their garden and orchard, they also utilise excess ingredients in their cocktails and ferment and preserve what they aren’t able to use.

The Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd

This Welsh microbrewery and gastropub took the word ‘local’ and ran with it. From brewing their own beers to growing their vegetables and sourcing their meat nearby, The Bunch of Grapes is a must-try Sunday spot if you find yourself in Pontypridd.
