Must-Have Responsible Brands from Copenhagen Fashion Week

Copenhagen Fashion Week has become the prelude to fashion month and Copenhagen has been hailed as the place to be if you want to spot the next season’s trends. The best in Danish style was on display in this showcase of style and patriotism. With beloved Scandi brands and fashion girly favourites such a REMAIN, ROTATE, Baum und Pferdgarten and Ganni showing more extensive (and trend led) collections, we want to know which brands and trends you can shop responsibly.
There is a lot of negativity surrounding Fashion Month as a whole but it’s worth pointing out that Copenhagen Fashion Week has implemented a strict set of sustainability requirements as of the AW23 season made up of 18 stringent action points. Emphasising transparency, brands participating in the event are expected to meet specific criteria, including responsible sourcing, ethical production, and reduced carbon emissions. By advocating for circularity and waste reduction, the initiative encourages brands to implement innovative practices, utilise sustainable materials, and engage in transparent communication.
In terms of trends, be prepared as the Y2K revival looks like it is here to stay, along with lots and lots of lace, double denim and dresses over trousers.
Finnish design house Marimekko presented its SS24 collection at Designmuseum Danmark, marking the commencement of the 60th-anniversary celebration of its renowned Unikko print design. The collection, showcased amidst live music at the heart of the Danish institution, featured large-scale Unikko flowers and celebrated archetype silhouettes, embodying Marimekko’s fusion of fashion, design, art, and culture. This was the first time showing this concept in Copenhagen – merged feminine minimalism with modern utilitarian workwear, uniting robust material qualities and crisp colourful poplin in a playful palette of contrasting hues.
Under the theme ‘Homecoming’, this collection delves into the profound concept of ‘home’, spanning from people and communities to emotions, encapsulating a sanctuary of inspiration, safety, and acceptance. The SS24 show artfully merged new and familiar faces from the House of Goya community, blending with models on the Eckersbergsgade runway, while a communal dinner table at its heart paid homage to Copenhagen’s famed street parties, uniting residents and visitors in a collective embrace. They are far from perfect but are on track of reaching its goal of becoming 95% sustainable by 2025.
Baum und Pferdgarten’s “A Postcard from Copenhagen” Spring Summer collection delved into the city’s essence as experienced by tourists, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of summer when visitors flooded the streets, joining locals in basking under the Nordic sun. The maritime spirit of Copenhagen’s historic harbour, a year-round hub of activity for Copenhageners, inspired the collection’s Breton stripes, sailor hats, and deep navy and crisp white palette, while iconic elements like the Little Mermaid statue and cherry blossoms were artfully reimagined into prints. The collection celebrated Copenhagen’s individualistic and diverse fashion ethos, highlighting the artistic and exciting ways people express themselves through clothing.
REMAIN’s Spring Summer 2024 collection offers a fresh perspective, inviting introspection and embracing individuality. Expertly crafted with intricate details, the collection reimagines traditional tailoring with modern silhouettes and materials, while leather forms a striking foundation. They have a strict code of conduct for the materials they use in their collections and strive to maintain their commitment to run a responsible and sustainable business, focusing on exquisite design and products in a high quality.
